Note: M. pygmaeus and M. melanotoma are
extremely similar species and their status as
separate species has been debated.
Martinez-Cascales et al. (2006) have
presented data to support the status as bonae
species of both taxa. Nevertheless, reliable
identification using morphological characters
is almost impossible and misidentifications
are therefore very frequent.

Distribution
This species
is officially not recorded from Germany.
However, since the species pair M. pygmaeus
and M. melanotoma are almost impossible to
separate using morphological characters, it is
possible that the species occurs in Germany,
but has been misidentified as M. pygmaeus.
Thus, all future records of specimens of this
species pair in Germany should be carefully
checked for their identity.
