Some authors argue that the original description of Notonecta marmorea is more similar to the present species than to Notonecta maculata and therefore use this name for the present species. However, the usage of a name is fixed to the physical type specimen, not to the description. Thus, the name Notonecta marmorea is a synonym of Notonecta maculata, not of the present species.
