Identification
Distribution
Recorded from North Africa. In Europe only
reported for Italy, Portugal and Spain. There is
no current record for Germany; however, in the
original description Herrich-Schaeffer obviously
writes "Germany and Portugal". Unfortunately, I
cannot confirm this at the present time, because
I have not yet seen a copy of
Herrich-Schaeffer´s book, because the
continuation of Panzer´s work by
Herrich-Schaeffer is a very rare work and I have
not yet been able to locate a copy. In any case,
at the time of the original description (i. e.
in 1835) "Germany" denoted the German
Confederation ("Deutscher Bund") and this
included e.g. Austria and parts of Italy. Thus,
"Germany" in the original description could
refer to that portion of the German
Confederation that is today part of Italy, which
would fit with the known distribution of the
species. However, there is also the possibility
that this species once occurred (or still
occurs) in southern Germany.
