Note: this species has a complicated taxonomic
history. It was first described as Coreus
crassicornis Latreille, 1804, but this name
became a junior secondary homonym of Cimex
crassicornis Linnaeus, 1758, when both species
were placed in Rhopalus. The junior name was
therefore replaced with Coreus clavicornis
Boitard, 1828. Unfortunately, this name is a
junior primary homonym of Coreus clavicornis
Fabricius, 1803 and is therefore invalid. The
next available name is Corizus maculatus
Fieber, 1837. Note that exactly the same name
has been used in an obviously independent
species description, Corizus maculatus
Herrich-Schaeffer, 1840, but this is not
problematic, because the younger name is a
junior primary homonym and thus invalid.
Therefore, most authors now use the nominal
maculatus Fieber, 1837 as the valid name and I
follow this notion here as well, because the
name is now in prevailing usage. However, Coreus
crassicornis Latreille, 1804 (currently in
Rhopalus) and Cimex crassicornis
Linnaeus, 1758 (currently in Stictopleurus)
are not currently regarded as conspecific.
Because the replacement name is invalid, a
case could also be made for the reinstatement
of Coreus
crassicornis Latreille, 1804 as the valid
name.
