No subspecies are recognized. However, some authors regard Stictopleurus pictus as a subspecies of the present species.

Original description

Synonyms
Cimex abutilon Rossi, 1790
Stictopleurus abutilon (Rossi, 1790)
Cimex fenestratus Gmelin, 1790 (p. 2187) (nomen dubium, unclear synonym)
Type locality: "Europa".
Corizus substriatus Burmeister, 1835
Rhopalus abutilon flavescens Fieber, 1861
Rhopalus signoreti Mulsant et Rey, 1870

Note: Cimex fenestratus is a nomen dubium that cannot be identified. The name has been coined by Gmelin for an unnamed species (Cimex no. 118) in the Museum Leskeanum (Zschach, 1788). The diagnosis reads "C.[imex] pallidus, coleoptris fenestratis: nervis pallide rufis". Dolling (2006) suggests that this name may refer to a species of Stictopleurus. If so, then the only German species with obvious pale red veins in the hemielytra is the present species. Thus, I provisionally place this name as a doubtful synonym in the synonymy of Stictopleurus abutilon.
