Biology
Adults fly in March to May. Nists in large colonies of up to several hundred single nests. The nests are made in sandy soil, preferrably near flood plains, because the animals only feed on Salix trees and also supply their nests exclusively with Salix pollen. The females close the entry of their nest with sand everytime they leave to collect pollen. This is obviously a protection against their parasite, the bee Nomada lathburiana, that patrol the colonies in large numbers waiting to enter an unguarded nest.
