Original description
Original spelling:
Helorus ruficornis
Foerster
A (1856). Hymenopterologische Studien, II.
Heft: Chalcidiae und Proctotrupii. Verlag von
Ernst ter Meer, Aachen (p. 143).
Locus
typicus: Not specified in the original
publication, but probably Aachen (Germany)
where Foerster lived. The whereabouts of the
type(s) are unknown.
Synonyms
Helorus
ruficornis Foerster, 1856 (p. 143)
Helorus
corruscus Dalla Torre, 1898
(misidentification, misspelling) (nec Haliday,
1857)
Helorus
flavipes auct. nec Kieffer, 1907
(misidentification)
Identification
Forewing length
2,8-3,7 mm. Very similar to Helorus coruscus
(see there for more information). The
specimens figured by Von
Achterberg (2006) are in fact Helorus
coruscus based on the figure of the
pterostigma.
Distribution
The species is
often confused (or synonymized) with Helorus
coruscus, and therefore most records are
unclear. Confirmed records exist for
Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Czech
Republic, and Scandinavia, but the species
is certainly more widespread. Helorus
ruficornis also appears to be the species
that has recently been introduced to Canada,
the USA, and South Africa.
Germany:
Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Bayern,
Baden-Württemberg.
Biology
Adults have been
collected in July to September in Central
Europe. The species parasitizes in lacewings (Neuroptera),
so far Dichochrysa ventralis and Dichochrysa
prasina have been reported as the host
species; however, the reports of Dichochrysa
ventralis may actually refer to Helorus
coruscus.
