Note: Xyela piliserra is sometimes regarded as a separate species. However, the type specimen cannot be found and all specimens in collections labelled as "piliserra" are in fact Xyela longula (Schedl 1978). Therefore, the notion that both names are synonyms is also adopted here. Note: Xyela erichsoni has been described without proper description and no specimen labeled with this name is present in the collection in Lund (Schedl 1978). However, in this collection is a label placed next to a specimen of Xyela longula (in Swedish) reading: "Xyela Erichsonii is presumably only a variety of X. longula" (Schedl 1978). It is unclear who put this label there and to what specimen this label referred originally, but it suggests that the person who revised this box in the collection synonymized both names. In addition, "longula" and "erichsoni" are both recorded from Sweden. Note: Xyelatana has previously been regarded as a separate genus, but is currently regarded as a synonym of Xyela.
