Note: The taxonomic subdivisions of the
Elachistidae are debated. A number of genera
have been described that show little evidence
of monophyly and might render other genera
paraphyletic. Kaila (1999) has performed a
cladistic analysis of the Elachistidae. This
analysis revealed several clearly monophyletic
groups. However, Kaila (1999) synonymized a
large number of genera with the genus
Perittia, although these genera are
monophyletic in the analysis. For example, in
the cladistic analysis the type species of
Perittia, Perittia obscurepunctella clusters
together with its congener Perittia
herrichiella; thus Perittia in its usual sense
is monophyletic in the analysis. In addition,
all other genera of this assemblage that have
been used in the analysis, Symphoristis,
Polymetis, Sineviana, Whitebreadia,
Zemiocrita, Aristoptila, Triboloneura and
Mendesia are monophyletic in the analysis too.
Nevertheless, Kaila (1999) synonymizes them
all and the reason for this is not clear to
me. Here I provisionally follow the
nomenclatural actions in Kaila (1999), but the
scientific justification of the synonymies
probably requires a thorough revisionary work
in the future.
