Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies. The nominate subspecies occurs in Germany. The other subspecies, C. m. montanicellus, might occur in Germany.

Some authors regard montanicellus as an individual abberration. I do not adopt this view here.

Distribution
Widely distributed in Europe (except for the southern parts) and western Asia. The nominate subspecies is recorded from all Bundesländer in Germany. The subspecies C. m. montanicellus occurs in the Tatra mountains. However, there are specimens described as "f. vulpinella" from Bayern, that seem to belong to this subspecies as well. Thus, C. m. montanicellus might be part of the fauna of Bayern.
