Subspecies

Several subspecies are recognized, but only the nominate form occurs in Germany.

Pyralis regalis Denis et Schiffermüller, 1775
Pyralis pulchellalis Millière, 1873



Identification
Wing span 18 - 25 mm. Ground color brown-red and a large golden-orange patch in the middle. The anteromedial and postmedial lines are white with a dark border and widening towards the costal edge. The fringes are slate gray and orange.


Distribution
Not common and only locally present. Southern and eastern Europe, Asia east to Japan. In Germany only recorded from Bayern.


Biology
Lives mainly in areas with trees and bushes. The larva lives in silken tubes on dead tree and bush leaves. Flight season June to October (where possible, otherwise only in June and July), larva lives from August and overwintering to May.
