Note: the Callianassa species from the area around Helgoland and the German Bight have initially been identified (correctly) as Callianassa subterranea Montagu, 1808. The notion that these population are not the true subterranea traces from Schellenberg (1928) who erroneously believed them to belong to Callianassa stebbingi (a junior synonym of Callianassa tyrrhena). However, in the same work he published a "Nachtrag" (addendum) where he notes that the correct species is Callianassa subterranea not Callianassa stebbingi. However, this addendum unfortunately went unnoticed by many following authors and therefore the present species can be found in many works as "Callianassa stebbingi". Thus, the mentioning of Callianassa stebbingi in works between ca. 1928 to 1950 could refer to the true Callianassa stebbingi (=Callianassa tyrrhena) or to the present species, and these works must therefore be read with caution.
