Note: the taxonomy of the genus Mecistocephalus is confused and some of
the species are difficult to identify. The present species is originally
only known from tropical America, but recently British specimens that
have previously been identified as Mecistocephalus maxillaris have been
re-identified as Mecistocephalus guildingii.

Distribution
|
Atlantic
coast of tropical America and introduced in the UK. Not yet recorded
from other places in Europe. However, this species has previously been
confused with Mecistocephalus maxillaris and thus it is likely that
other European records of Mecistocephalus maxillaris may in fact be
Mecistocephalus guildingii or even other introduced species. Thus,
special care must be taken when identifying a specimen of
Mecistocephalus.
