Distribution

Occurs irregularly on the northern parts of the German North Sea coast in winter. Scattered records also exist for inland lakes in Germany. Occurs on the coasts in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, UK and Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands, northern coasts of France, Spain, Portugal. Breeds on Iceland and Greenland. Records of breedings exist also from Scotland and several islands in the European polar sea. The species also occurs in Canada and the northern USA.
