The substructure of this species is unclear. Many more subspecies have
been described, but are discussed controversially and are not
generally accepted. The list above only gives the (more-or-less)
uncontroversial subtaxa (the others are here regarded as synonyms of
their respective subtaxa). In addition, the taxon Periparus melanolophus
is variably
regarded as subspecies of the present species or as a separate species.
Only the nominate subspecies occurs in Germany.
