Subspecies
|
(1) Hyla
arborea arborea (Linnaeus, 1758)
(2) Hyla arborea kretensis Ahl, 1931
(Crete and other Greek islands and Asia
Minor)
(3) Hyla arborea molleri Bedriaga, 1890
(Portugal and Spain)
(4) Hyla arborea schelkownikowi Cernov,
1926 (Caucasus)
The status of Hyla arborea molleri is
debated; some authors regard it as a
subspecies of Hyla meridionalis, rather
than a subspecies of the present
species. Only the nominate form occurs
in Germany.
The other European species of Hyla,
namely Hyla intermedia Boulenger, 1882
(=variegata) (Italy, Switzerland,
possibly Slovenia), Hyla meridionalis
Boettger, 1874 (south-western Europe,
Canary Islands, North Africa), Hyla
sarda De Betta, 1853 (Sardinia,
Corsica), Hyla savignyi Audouin, 1827
(Trans-caucasia, Near East), have also
been regarded as subspecies of Hyla
arborea by some authors, but are
currently regarded as separate species.

Hyla arborea orientalis Bedriaga, 1890
Note: Hyla africana Ahl, 1924 is not a
synonym of Hyla arborea, but is often
erroneously placed in the synonymy of
Hyla arborea, because it is a synonym
of Hyla meridionalis Boettger, 1874,
which in the past has been regarded as
a subspecies or even a synonym of Hyla
arborea.
Note: the genus Hyla is paraphyletic
in the analysis by Frost
et al. 2006. However, these
authors do not take nomenclatural
action, because they suspect their
analysis to suffer from insufficient
taxon sampling and incomplete data
acquisition. I agree that the
phylogeny of the tree frogs is
currently not well resolved and I
refrain from performing any
nomenclatural changes.
Additional English names: Green Tree
Frog, Common Tree Frog.
