(1) Phocoena phocoena phocoena (Linnaeus, 1758)
(2) Phocoena phocoena relicta (Abel, 1905)
(2) Phocoena phocoena vomerina (Gill, 1865)
The status of all subspecies is debated. The taxon relicta denotes the
population of the Black Sea. Indeed,
the population in the Black Sea is geographically separated from the
Atlantic populations indicating a lack of gene flow, but
the morphological distinction of the Black Sea animals from typical
Atlantic animals is very low, and several authors do not recognize this
taxon as a separate subspecies.
The taxon vomerina encompasses all Pacific populations of Phocoena
phocoena. Although there is certainly genetic separation between the
Pacific and Atlantic populations caused by the disjunct distribution,
the morphological differences between them are very small and the status
of the Pacific populations as a separate subspecies has been
questioned. On the other hand, Shirihai and Jarrett (2006) suggest that
the Pacific populations actually represent two separate subspecies, the
eastern Pacific (Canada, USA) taxon vomerina and the western Pacific (Russia,
China, Japan) unnamed taxon.
The Atlantic populations are all placed in the nominate subspecies, but
have been subdivided into 9 more or less distinct groups, that are
reported to differ slightly in morphology and genetics, but these
differences are not generally deemed to be significant enough to assign
subspecies status to these groups. These nine groups are:
1. Icelandic-Faeroean-Greenlandic animals
2. Irish and western British animals
3. Animals from the Gulf of Biscaya and the English Channel
4. North Sea animals
5. Baltic Sea animals
6. Norwegian animals
7. Animals from the Barents Sea and White Sea
8. Iberian animals
9. Animals from New Foundland and eastcoast USA
Of these forms the North Sea form and the Baltic Sea form occur in Germany.
