Der Status dieser Art ist noch nicht abschließend geklärt.
Sie ist Theodoxus fluviatilis sehr ähnlich und besitzt wie
diese ein Operculum ohne Pseudapophyse. Die Arbeiten von Sands
et al. (2019), Sands et al. (2020), und Anistratenko et al.
(2020) deuten aber darauf hin, dass Theodoxus velox eine
eigene Art ist und möglicherweise die Schwesterart zu
Theodoxus fluviatilis darstellt. Auch der Name der Art ist
noch nicht endgültig geklärt. Theodoxus sarmaticus wurde
bislang entweder als eigene Art oder als Synonym von Theodoxus
fluviatilis aufgefasst (Anistratenko et al. 2020), ist
möglicherweise aber ein älteres Synonym von Theodoxus velox
(Sands et al. 2020) und wäre dann der gültige Name für die
Art.
Die Art ist hauptsächlich in der Schwarzmeerregion verbreitet,
Glöer (2019) führt jedoch Funde aus Norddeutschland an (in
Havel und Alster und im Schlänitzsee und Zierker See), die
möglicherweise zu dieser Art gehören. Generell ist es
vorstellbar, dass Theodoxus velox außerhalb der
Schwarzmeerregion bislang mit Theodoxus fluviatilis
verwechselt worden ist und deshalb in Europa weiter verbreitet
ist als bisher bekannt.
