Recent developments in the field of computers have had a large impact on language in both form and usage. The rise of the internet has resulted in new types of communication, such as e-mails, forums, chatrooms, online games etc., which often display innovative graphemes, spellings, word formations and syntax. This seminar examines the emergence and usage of such features and also pays attention to sociolinguistic factors and discourse analysis, for example, in text messaging and netspeak.
