Seminar für Englische Philologie
Universität Göttingen
Politically, the Anglo-Saxon period ended in 1066 when William of Normandy became king of England. However, it continued to have an impact up to the modern day. We will examine in how far language change can be observed in copies of earlier texts made during the twelfth century and whether there was any knowledge of Old English before its renewed interest in Early Modern England. Other aspects to be discussed are the depiction of the Anglo-Saxons in a number of Middle English "Matter of England"-Romances as well as subsequent representations, for example, in modern versions of Beowulf. Due to its interdisciplinarity this course is suitable for students interested in language, literature and culture.
