Singa hamata melanocephala (C. L. Koch, 1836)
The taxon melanocephala is usually regarded as a subspecies of Singa hamata. However,
Breitling et al. 2016
correctly point out that the original description of Singa
melanocephala perfectly matches an alleged color morph of the species
Singa nitidula. The typical form of Singa nitidula has an entirely black
prosoma, but there is an additional form (with a reddish prosoma with a
black triangle) that is usually also subsumed under the species Singa
nitidula. This form might indeed be just a color variant of Singa
nitidula. In this case, Singa melanocephala would be a senior synonym of
Singa nitidula. Alternatively, the form with the reddish prosoma is in
fact a separate species. In this case, this species would bear the name
Singa melanocephala. In the absence of further information I
provisionally favor the second hypothesis and regard Singa melanocephala
as a separate species. Further data is urgently required to establish
the status of Singa melanocephala.
