Aphthona flava Guillebeau, 1894 (not yet recorded from Germany) and Aphthona nigriscutis Foudras, 1860 are very similar to the present species and have previously been included in the synonymy of the present species. However, Konstantinov (1998) regards them as separate species and I follow this notion here.

The identity of the taxon Aphthona nigriventris is unclear. Konstantinov (1998) lists the taxon twice: in the synonymy of Aphthona nigriscutis and in the synonymy of the present species. Of course, this is an error and I therefore provisionally retain the taxon here in the synonymy of the oldest available name in this species-complex. Unfortunately, the type(s) of nigriventris appear to be lost, thus the identity of this taxon will remain unclear.
