Aphthona czwalinae
Weise, 1888 (p. 911)
Aphthona czwalinai auct. (unjustified emendation; see below)
Aphthona coerulescens Weise, 1889
There is disagreement whether the original spelling "czwalinae" should
be emended to "czwalinai".
Weise (1888) has evidently derived the species-group
name from the family name of Mr. Czwalina, because he writes in
the original description: "Von Herrn Czwalina aus Königsberg auf
Euphorbia esula L. bei Oliva, in der Nähe Danzig´s entdeckt"
(translation: "Discovered on Euphorbia esula L. near Oliwa, in the
vicinity of Gdansk by Mr. Czwalina from Kaliningrad "). Thus, if one
assumes that
Weise (1888) intended to acknowledge the discoverer Mr.
Czwalina by dedicating the species-group name to him, the correct
spelling should indeed be the masculine genitive "czwalinai". On the
other hand,
Weise (1888) did not explicitly write that he dedicated the
name to Mr. Czwalina himself. He could have thanked Mr. Czwalina by
dedicating the species-group name to Mr. Czwalina´s wife, daughter or
mother. Thus, if
Weise (1888) had written "I dedicate this species to
the discoverer Mr. Czwalina", then this would be clear evidence for an
incorrect original spelling in the sense of Article 32.5. of the Code.
Because this clear evidence is lacking I suggest that the criteria of
Article 32.5. are not met and the original spelling "czwalinae" must be
retained.
