Please note that the species-group name clypeata has been misapplied to
the species Metopsia similis until the genus revision by
Zerche (1998).
Thus, reports of "Metopsia clypeata" in works before 1998 usually refer
to Metopsia similis instead of the true Metopsia clypeata. The present
species appears in pre-1998 works usually under the synonym name
Metopsia retusa.
The nominal taxa retusus, flavus, corticale, gallicum and hispanicum have been synonymized by
Zerche (1998).

Distribution
In Germany the species is restricted to the area left of the Rhine. It
is recorded from Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Nordrhein-Westfalen,
Baden-Württemberg and Niedersachsen. The overall distribution includes
northern Africa (Algeria, Tunisia), Spain, Portugal, Ireland, UK,
Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Gotland (Sweden),
Sardinia (Italy).
