The status of the scydmaenid beetles is controversial. While the taxon
has been regarded as a separate family, Scydmaenidae, for a long time,
there is now accumulating evidence that the scydmaenids are in fact
nested within the Staphylinidae. Analysis of morphological features suggest a sister-group relationship with the stenid and euaesthetid staphylinids, but molecular analyses are inconclusive (
Grebennikov and Newton 2009). I follow here the status revision by
Grebennikov and Newton (2009)
who downgrade the taxon from family rank to subfamily rank within
Staphylinidae, but more detailed analyses are required to establish the
status of scydmaenids in relation to the uncontroversial Staphylinidae.
