Scatophaga turpis Haliday (in Curtis), 1832 (nomen nudum)
Note: the species-group-name "analis" has been used by
Meigen (1826) twice,
once in Cordylura and once in Scatophaga. Apparently, he believed these
two to be different species. Subsequent authors have considered these
two taxa as nomina dubia that cannot be identified from the original
description and the types are apparently lost. However,
Sifner (2008) has argued that both "analis" taxa are synonyms of the present species and I accept these tentative synonymies here. The
Fauna-Europaea-Web-Service (note: external link)
additionally lists a third "analis" taxon, as a separate species
"Scathophaga analis Meigen, 1803". I have not been able to trace the
original description of this taxon and have no further information about
it.
Similarly, the taxa thoracica, umbrarum and turpis are also usually regarded as nomina dubia, but were placed in synonymy by
Sifner (2008) as well. Again I accept here these tentative synonymies.
