No subspecies are recognized. Some authors regard Scathophaga
stercoraria soror (a South African taxon) as a subspecies, but I do not

Note: the status of the nominal Scatophaga soror described from South
Africa is unclear. Some authors consider it as a separate species or
subspecies, but Sifner (2008) has placed it in the synonymy of the
present species. In addition, a number of taxa described from South
Africa are also placed in the synonymy of the present species. Although
there is the possibility that the South African population is indeed a
separate taxon at the level of subspecies or species, I provisionally
follow the notion that these taxa should be placed in synonymy, but more
information about their status is neccessary.
