Until recently, this species has been known under the name Dasysyrphus
lunulatus. However, several authors have expressed doubts about the
identity of Meigen´s Syrphus lunulatus, and argued that this name is
actually a synonym of Syrphus venustus (see also there in the synonymy
list), a species also described by Meigen. In the search for a name for
the now nameless species formerly known as "Dasysyrphus lunulatus", the
old description of "Musca pinastri" was unearthed. This was
nomenclaturally unfortunate, because that description was vague and did
not allow the unequivocal identification of "Musca pinastri" with the
species formerly known as "Dasysyrphus lunulatus". This awkward
situation was resolved by
Locke and Skevington (2013) who have designated a neotype.
