The taxa astutus and vockerothi have been synonymized after the study of the type material (
Vockeroth 1986).
Vockeroth (1986)
has studied the holotype of Syrphus rufipunctatus Curran, 1925 and has
speculates that this taxon may simply be a melanistic female of the
present species, but has not suggested formal synonymy.
The taxon bucculatus has long been regarded as a synonym of the present
species, but this has been based on a flawed concept of bucculatus.
Mazanek et al. 1998
could clarify this problem by analysis of the type material of
bucculatus. This showed that bucculatus is not a synonym of Eupeodes
luniger, but is in fact a different species and an older name for the
taxon lunulatus.
There are several similar species. Differs
from Lapposyrphus lapponicus by the curvature of vein r4+5: strongly curved
in lapponicus, slightly curved in luniger. Differs from Eupeodes
corollae by the extent of the yellow abdominal marks: marks reach the
lateral margin in corollae, but end before the margin in luniger.
Similar marks also occur in the genus Scaeva, but this genus can be
identified by its swollen face.
