The taxon marginatus has been synonymized after the study of the type material (Vockeroth 1986).

This species has been difficult to place in a genus. It has been placed in its own genus Lapposyrphus, but many authors have downgraded it to subspecies rank within Metasyrphus. When Metasyrphus was synonymized with Eupeodes, the taxon lapponicus moved along and was placed in Eupeodes. However, molecular phylogenetic analyses have shown that the taxon lapponicus does not belong to Metasyrphus/Eupeodes and therefore Lapposyrphus has been reinstated to genus rank (Mengual et al. 2008; Mengual 2015).
