The identity of the taxon niger is unclear. It is a likely synonym of the present species, but could also refer to a very dark specimen of Drymus sylvaticus.

A lectotype has been selected for the taxon ryeii by Jessop (1984) from two male type specimens re-discovered in Bolton Museum (Greater Manchester, UK).
