Orthotelia sparganiella auct. (unjustified emendation)
There is confusion about the authorship of the name sparganella. Most
authors give Carl Peter Thunberg as the author, but this is incorrect:
the name sparganella has been introduced by Carl Gustav Schalen in his
dissertation that he defended on May 17, 1788. I do not know whether his
dissertation has been published in the same year. The only published
form of his thesis that I am aware of is in a collection of
entomological theses from the University of Uppsala. This is a
collection of all theses on the collections in the Museum Naturalium in Upsala supervised
by Carl Peter Thunberg from 1787 to 1800. Each thesis is equipped with
its own title sheet that gives the date of the examination, but not the
date of the publication of the thesis. All pages are continuously
paginated, thus giving the impression that the collection has been
published as a monograph. If this is true, then the year of publication
is unknown, but must be after the date of the last included thesis, i.e.
after 1800. In the absence of the exact publication dates of the single
theses, I use the examination dates given on the thesis title sheets as
a provisional publication date. The author of the theses is of course
the respective student, not Thunberg. Thunberg was only the supervisor
and publisher of the theses, thus he can be viewed as the editor of the
publications.
