Ochlodes faunus Turati, 1906
Ochlodes venatus auct. nec Bremer et Grey, 1853 (misidentification; see below)
Note: this species has been known as Ochlodes venatus until recently.
However, the taxon venatus has been described from China and there is
now evidence that the European populations are not conspecific with
venatus. The oldest name for the European populations is Papilio
sylvanus, but this name is a junior primary homonym and is therefore
normally permanently invalid. However, the International Commission on
Zoological Nomenclature has ruled in Opinion 1944 (ICZN 2000),
that the primary homonymy is to be disregarded, and has placed both
homonyms on the Official List of Specific Names in Zoology. Thus,
sylvanus is the valid name for the taxon, despite its junior primary
homonymy. Without this ruling, the valid name would be the oldest name
that is not a homonym, i.e. the name faunus. The true Ochlodes venatus
is an Asian species and does not occur in Germany.
