Identification

Forewing length: 47-50 mm. Very large and impressive butterfly that cannot be confused with another species in Germany.

Distribution
|
Originally
distributed
throughout North and South America. In the nineteenth century the
species was first recorded from Australia, New Zealand, India and
southeast Asia. The species is a strong migrant and is also present on a
number of Pacific and Atlantic islands, including Hawaii, the Azores,
and the Canary Islands. Strays regularly reach Europe and are frequently
seen in the Mediterranean, where there are also stable populations in
southern Spain. Rare strays can be encountered elsewhere in Europe,
including France and the UK. In Germany the species is an extremely rare
stray, probably drifted by strong storms.
