Biology
This is a typical woodland species, and is also found in orchards with old fruit trees. The larva feeds on dead wood of broad-leaved trees, like Salix, Morus, Ulmus, Malus, Prunus. It can also be found in lichens or under loosened tree bark. Larvae are present from September, they overwinter and then pupate in May. The imagines fly from May to July on warm sunny afternoons till dusk and can be seen swarming around older or free-standing trees, which is probably an equivalent of "hill-topping" behaviour and eases mate pairing.
