Hübner described this species as Alucita acanthadactyla, but later
emended the original spelling himself to Alucita
acanthodactyla. According to the rules of the International Code he can
be interpreted as the First Reviewer. This has
already been noted by Hannemann (1977). However, most authors prefer to
accept the original spelling as the valid name (e.g. Gaedike and Heinicke (1999); Gielis
(1995)). I
agree with this notion, because subsequent emendations should be
accepted as justified only in absolutely necessary cases (e.g. clear
typographical or grammatical errors) in order to ensure nomenclatural
stability.
Identification
Distribution
In Germany the species is recorded from the following Länder: Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen,
Hessen, and Bayern. Only older records from before 1980 exist for Schleswig-Holstein,
Baden-Württemberg, Saarland, Sachsen, and Sachsen-Anhalt. Recods
from before 1900 exist for Brandenburg and Thüringen (Gaedike and Heinicke (1999)).
Biology
Flight season from June to August and a second generation in October.
Widely distributed in Germany, the habitat ranges from forests to
meadows, heaths and gardens. Food plants of the larvae are mainly
Stachys species, but also Ononis repens, Ononis spinosa, Mentha spec.,
Salvia spec., Euphrasia spec., Teucrium spec., Chenopodium spec.,
Calluna spec., Erica spec., Geranium robertianum, Bartsia spec.,
Carlina spec., Vaccinium oxycoccos, Calamintha spec., Jurinea spec.,
Nepeta spec. (Hannemann 1977).
