The identity of the taxon tetradactyla has been unclear for a while and
the name has variously been applied to several species including the present one.
However, Agassiz (2001)
pointed to the confusion surrounding the
species epithet tetradactyla and asked the International Commission
on Zoological Nomenclature to clarify the issue. The Commission has
done so by declaring the same specimen to be the type for both the
tridactyla and the tetradactyla taxon (ICZN 2003).
In this way the
contentious name tetradactyla became an objective synonym of tridactyla.
Because both names have been published in the same work, none of them
has automatically priority over the other, and the Commission also ruled
that tridactyla has priority over tetradactyla.
