Subspecies
No subspecies are
recognized; this species is here regarded as a monotypic species.
Synonyms
Actenia brunnealis (Treitschke, 1829)
Actenia phaealis (Hampson, 1900)
Actenia lividalis (Constantini, 1922)
Actenia nigrobrunnealis (Schawerda, 1941)
Identification
Wing span 18 - 22 mm. Very variable
species: ground color mostly straw brown, but can also be much darker
and reddish or purplish (especially in the male). The forewing has a
dark discal spot and a broad medial band across, bordered by the
antemedial and postmedial line, which may be conspicuous or almost the
same colour as the remaining wing. Along the costal edge is a
conspicuous yellow and dark-brown zebra pattern.
Distribution
Distributed
mainly in southern Europe. A
few records from
south-eastern Asia. Also occurs in north-western Africa. Not yet
recorded in Germany, but there are records from Austria and Belgium not
far from the German border; the species can therefore be expected to
also occur in Germany.
Biology
Mostly found on dry and warm open areas. Flight season July to
September. Larvae from September and overwintering to June. Larvae live
in
silken tubes on
the roots of Epilobium, Helianthemum, Globularia and probably other
plants.
