Identification
|
Wing
span 16 - 30 mm. A variable species. Forewings dark grey and brownish
with lighter and darker markings and a light antemedial line close to
the wing base.

Distribution
|
Widely
distributed and common. Europe (without the north), Asia, north western
Africa, North America, Australia. In Germany recorded from most
Bundesländer, but many records date from before 1980.
|
Biology
|
Synanthropic,
often a pest species. Larva lives in silken tubes in plant material,
but also reported as a pest species from cheese dairies. Larva can live
up to two years before pupariation. Imago flies from June to September
(the year round in buildings).
