Identification
Wing span 18 - 42 mm. A variable species. Forewings grey and brownish with lighter and darker markings.


Distribution
Widely distributed and common. Holarctic and oriental species. In Germany recorded from all Bundesländer.


Biology
Synanthropic, often a pest species. Larva lives in silken tubes in any kind of substrate (plant, animal, detritus). Larva can live up to two years before pupariation. Imago flies from April to September (the year round in buildings).
