Note: the genus Ocrasa is very closely related to Hypsopygia and some authors regard these names as synonyms. I retain here the two taxa as separate genera until I have more information about their phylogeny.



Identification
Wing span 20 - 32 mm. Forewing ground color dark bluish gray, more purple (or reddish-brown) towards the wing base. The anteromedial and postmedial lines are pale yellow. The fringes are slate gray.


Distribution
A common species. Occurs in all of Europe (except for northern parts), north-west Africa, Asia east to Japan and Sakhalin. In Germany recorded from all Bundesländer.



Biology
Lives mainly in areas with trees and bushes, but is also found in buildings. The larva lives in silken tubes in plant material e.g. hay, straw, leaf litter, and nests of birds. Flight season May to October (but may be found the year round in houses), larva lives from September and overwintering to June.
