Many more subspecies have been described, but are not generally accepted
and synonymized with one of the above. The subspecies in the list above
are also not universally accepted; more research is required to
eludicate the true genetical substructure of Poecile palustris.
Note: the name Poecile palustris brandtii is currently regarded as a
nomen dubium and therefore is not used by most authors. The next younger
name is kabardensis, and the subspecies is therefore referred to as
Poecile palustris kabardensis. I have not yet been able to review the
original descriptions of these two taxa, and therefore provisionally
retain the older name.
Note: I have not yet been able to check which form "hypermelaena" or
"hypermelaenus" is correct according to the Code. In the meantime I keep
the spelling of the original description "hypermelaena".
Only the nominate form occurs in Germany.

Note: Parus communis korejewi Zarudny et Haerms, 1902 is often listed as
a synonym of Poecile palustris palustris, but in fact belongs to Poecile
palustris stagnatilis (if this taxon is recognized as a separate
subspecies).
Note: most authors argue that the gender of the genus Poecile is
unclear. These authors propose that there is no evidence (neither
original nor circumstantial) to suggest its gender, and thus it must be
regarded as masculine by default. However, this is incorrect: "Poecile"
is originally the name of the famous art hall at the market of ancient
Athens, and the name has later been used for a similar art gallery in
the villa of the Roman emperor Hadrian. Its use in the Latin language
clearly assigns to "Poecile" feminine gender (Poecile, -es), thus the
species epithets must also use the feminine gender.
