This species is widely distributed in North and Central America and northern South America. It has been introduced elsewhere, e.g. in New Zealand, Finland and the Czech Republic. Grimmberger (2014) reports a single record from Germany (from Sachsen) in the 1990s, and he suggests that this specimen may have been a stray from the Czech population.
