Fables in Premodern Persian Literature

Having published my study The Arabic Fable: An Inventory of Short Stories Featuring Speaking Animals and Other Nonhuman Characters in Premodern Arabic Literature in 2025, I am currently working to compile a similar inventory of fables in premodern Persian literature. Although there is a considerable overlap with Arabic fables, Persian fables have their own specifics. Notably, the bulk of premodern Persian fables is encountered in authored works. But then, the divide between authored fables and fables from anonymous tradition is not as clear as it is in Arabic sources. At present, the inventory of fables in premodern Persian literature comprises some 265 items documented between the beginning of the eleventh century and the end of the eighteenth century.
