Projects

Scientific Biography
Following from earlier projects on William Buckland and Richard Owen, an Alexander von Humboldt project has been carried out over the last years. Its main phase has come to a conclusion with the appearance of Alexander on Humboldt: a Metabiography (2005). Currently, a new project on Johann Friedrich Blumenbach is being developed.

Science-and-Religion
In order to help close the "information gap" at the interface of science and religion, an international, collaborative project has been started on "Eminent Lives in Twentieth Century Science-and-Religion," funded by the John Templeton Foundation. Its purpose is to explore the interactions of the religious beliefs of scientists with their practical scientific lives in a series of chapter-length biographies of approximately 36 scientists. The project involves teaching initiatives on science-and-religion as well as conferences.

Biology without Darwin
In continuation of earlier research into the life and work of Richard Owen, non-Darwinian theories about the origin of life and of species are being explored. Current emphasis is on early-nineteenth century representatives of "Neither creation nor evolution, but the third way in thinking about the origin of species."
