Originally native to South-America, the species has been accidentally introduced elsewhere together with its host plants (mainly palms). None of the host plants of the present species occur in Germany, but Buchsbaum and Fuchs (2016) suggest that ornamental plants that are on display in the summer and are kept at a cool, but frost-free place during the winter may provide the species with a suitable habitat.
