The present species has previously also been placed in the genus Teleiodes. Teleiodes, however, is a polyphyletic assemblage and many previous subgroups of Teleiodes are currently recognised as separate genera. In their revision of the group, Huemer and Karsholt (1999) have recognised Istrianis as a separate genus, and in the meantime a number of additional species have been transferred to or described in Istrianis. The phylogenetic study of Teleiodes and related genera is still incomplete, but the monophyly of Istrianis is well-supported so far.

Note: the taxon arenicolella that has sometimes been listed as a subspecies or synonym of the present species, is in fact a separate species (that occurs in northern Africa, Spain and southern France) (Bidzilya and Karsholt 2015)
