Nothris lemniscellus (Zeller, 1839)
The species epithet lemniscellus can be regarded as an irregularly
formed diminutive of Latin lemniscus ("band, ribbon"), which is a
masculine noun. Alternatively, one could argue that the word is not an
irregular diminutive, but rather an "invented" name similar to Roman
cognomina, which were characterised by unusual endings, lack of any
grammatical regularity, and did not have to agree in gender with their
bearer. In this case the original description of the name as "Ypsolophus
lemniscellus" coined a cognomen "lemniscellus" as a noun in apposition.
Thus, the form "lemniscellus" is supported by two independent lines of
evidence and this form is therefore adopted here.
