Alsophila quadripuncta auct. (misspelling)
Note: Phalaena mellearia Scharfenberg (in Bechstein et Scharfenberg), 1805 is not a synonym of the present species (see
Agriopis aurantiaria).
Note: Geometra apteraria has been described by
Haworth (1809)
as a flightless female with an unknown male. He also suggested that his
taxon apteraria is identical to Linne´s Phalaena Tinea lichenella. The
latter is a Psychidae, not a Geometridae, thus casting doubt on the
identity of Haworth´s "apteraria". The description is not clear enough
and could apply to many flightless female lepidopterans. However,
Haworth mentions two specifics that strongly suggest that the taxon is
actually synonymous with Alsophila aceraria: first, he writes that the
wings are entirely absent, thus ruling out most flightless Geometridae,
because the females usually have little wing stumps, but agreeing well
with the genus Alsophila. Second, he writes "Imago f. Dec. Truncis, at
rarissime" ("the female imago on tree trunks in December, but extremely
rare"). The fact that the imago is found in December on tree trunks very
strongly suggests that the animals were Alsophila aceraria, because
this is the only species with entirely wingless females that occurs at
that time of year. This species is not currently recorded from Great
Britain, but may have occurred there in the 19th century, but was
already extremely rare ("at rarissime").
