Xanthia sulphurago (Denis et Schiffermueller, 1775)
Tiliacea sulphurago (Denis et Schiffermueller, 1775)
The placement of this species in Tiliacea is doubtful. Both in imaginal
and in larval characters the species is quite far from the type species
of
Tiliacea, Tiliacea citrago, and is rather similar to species in Xanthia.
The species is undoubtedly congeneric with Tiliacea cypreago (not
recorded from Germany) and is also similar to Tiliacea aurago.
Beck (1991)
has erected a separate subgenus Aurxanthia for Tiliacea aurago that could be
elevated to genus rank and could also include the present species, but it is also possible that the present species
actually belongs to Xanthia. The relationships of Xanthia and its
allies requires a thorough revision using modern phylogenetic methods.
Until more data about these relationships becomes available I
provisionally retain the species in Tiliacea.
